ITS Training Program FAQ
-
What is the ITS Training Program?
-
The ITS Training Program presents a series of free
hands-on computer workshops. It is a service that offers computer workshops in
the use of campus wide network and communication tools, common personal
productivity tools, and resources available through the Internet. The Training Program
offers over one hundred free hands-on computer workshops every quarter. In
addition, the Training Program develops detailed documentation for applications available
in the Open Access Labs. This program is run by students for students.
-
Which applications and software
does the program teach?
-
There are over a dozen titles to choose from including a six-part series for
each application in the MS Office suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
and a three-part series of MS Publisher. Some other workshop titles are SPSS
(statistical analysis software), Outlook Web Access, MS Excel Functions and Data
Analyses, PowerPoint Crash Course, Using MS
Excel for Financial Investments, Creating a Webpage Using HTML, Adobe
PhotoShop, Flash, and Dreamweaver.
-
I am interested in a software
program that you guys teach, but I don't have that program; what should I do?
-
All programs or applications taught through our service are available in any of
the on-campus Open Access Labs.
-
Is it okay to go to a workshop if
I missed the previous one?
-
Although you may do so, it is generally not recommended as it is always better
to attend all sessions. If you happen to miss a session, it is probably a good
idea to review the missed material prior to coming to the next class, out of
courtesy for your workshop trainer and fellow student attendees.
-
Where can I get the handouts if I
missed a workshop?
-
Each of the hands-on workshops is accompanied by step-by-step instructions and
sample data files. You can find the workbooks and data files online from our
site.
Note: Authentication is required to access these workbooks.
Currently enrolled students may login with their NIS accounts.
In addition to hands-on workshops, the Training Program develops detailed digital documentation
for some of the applications available in the computer labs. You can access
these materials online at http://www.calstatela.edu/handouts
-
Where are the workshops located?
-
Training Program workshops are held in two different locations:
- Library South Palmer Wing, Fourth Floor, Room 4056 (Library Training Lab -
LPW-4056)
- King Hall C Wing, Basement, Room 171 (King Hall Training Lab - KH-C171)
LPW-4056 is equipped with 22 stations while KH-C171 is equipped with 15 stations for participants. Due to space
availability, seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
-
When are the workshops being
offered?
-
For a complete listing of workshops and dates, pick up one of our schedule
booklets, available from any of the Open Access Labs, Library Training Lab,
King Hall Training Lab, and Library South Palmer Wing Lobby. For a more updated
listing, visit the Training Program Home Page at http://sql.calstatela.edu/training to view our
Workshop Calendar.
-
Do I get credit for taking a
workshop? Any certificate?
-
There is no credit for these workshops. However, Certificates of Completion are
offered for those who have attended ALL parts of any Microsoft Office (Access,
Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word), Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash, including SPSS workshops. Note that ALL parts within a series must be taken WITHIN one single
quarter. There are
NO exceptions.
-
How much is it to attend a
workshop?
-
These computer workshops are available at no cost to you; they are FREE.
-
I don't understand some parts of
the workshop, who can I ask?
-
During the workshop you may ask the trainer or any of the assistants. If time
permits, you may approach the trainer after the workshop.
-
Where can I get a copy of those
binders provided in the workshops?
-
You can download the content of our workbooks from our site by clicking on the
corresponding workshop link from the left navigation menu and select Workbook
and Data Files link. Each workbook is divided into several parts, which are
further divided into individual lessons. These workbooks are available in the
Adobe PDF file format while the data files are provided as self-extracting
archives.
Note: Authentication is required to access these workbooks.
Currently enrolled students may login with their NIS accounts.
-
I have some questions about my
homework, can I ask you?
-
The extent of our help is strictly limited to the material and content that is
covered in the workshops. If further help is required, it is recommended that
you seek your corresponding instructor or advisor.
